Mixed 6s Tournament at Surrey Spartans

 30th Apr 2016

20160430InbetweenersTeam-200Last Saturday a team of Guildford players participated in the Spartans Summer 6s Festival, with temperatures due to hit 25 degrees the team knew they were going to be playing in very unfamiliar conditions. The tournament rules were indoor but played outdoors on a quarter pitch; Spartans even had dividing boards, everyone agreed it sounded a lot of fun and they weren't wrong...

v Woking Pirates A (2-0 win)

Drawn in Pool B our team, The Inbetweeners, faced Woking Pirates A. The game was won 2-0 with goals from Sam, who really was shocked to find himself in a shooting position, and Ross T.

v Team Peanut (0-3 loss)

Next up were Team Peanut, a very strong representative side(!), who went on to be eventual winners. Our team lost this game 3-0.

v Camberlemurs (1-1 draw)

The third game was against Camberlemurs, who scored first but there was some question as to whether the goal should have been allowed. Ross equalised and the game ended 1-1.

v Team Superman (4-0 win)

The fourth game was versus Team Superman. We were constantly on the attack, the first goal came from Dave, quickly followed by a goal from Connor, third came from Dave after Connor had lured the GK to commit too soon, the fourth and final goal came from Jason, the game ended 4-0.

v Cunning Stunts (2-1 win)

The last pool game was against the Cunning Stunts made up of Brighton, Worthing and Lewes players. It was a very close match which ended 2-1 with JY scoring The Inbetweeners only goal.

The pool ended with two wins, two losses and a draw.

From here on things became a little confusing, we weren't sure if we finished third or fourth in the pool but we entered the play off phase.

Play-off v ?? (2-0 win)

I'm not sure who the first match was against but The Inbetweeners won 2-0 with some real team goals, the first from Ross after a sublime pass from JY. The second came from Alice at the back, to JY to Connor who scored the second.

Semi-final v Team Nutmeg (3-0 win)

In the Semi Final we met Team Nutmeg who had several Guildford players in the team so there was everything to play for, The Inbetweeners weren't phased, Luke opened the scoring, Connor scored a spectacular deflection and JY scored the third, the game finished 3-0 with the defenders helping Jemma keeping yet another clean sheet.

Final (1-1 draw), won on shuttles

On to the Final, Connor opened the scoring early on, The Inbetweeners had all the play but the opposition broke, Jemma committed to her player, there was a scramble in the D and opposition got a shot off, but Jessica, sensing the danger positioned herself on the line and calmly swept the ball away. More dominate play from The Inbetweeners couldn't see them score another goal despite the opposition having no keeper.  The opposition broke again and unfortunately scored an equaliser.

The game ended 1-1 so into to shuttles they went. The opposition had to borrow a keeper.  First up was Connor who scored. GK Jemma saved, Alice was next up and scored but was sadly a second out of time, Jemma saved the next, Ross took the next and converted his from the rebound, Jemma put their next player off enough for the shot to go wide.  JY came up next and scored to ensure The Inbetweeners won!

Everyone had a great day, the defenders were the key to the success of the team and sterling work, despite the heat, from the midfield gave the forwards the opportunities to score.

Team:  Alice L, Connor M, Dave T, Jason S, Jemma W, Jessica W, JY C, Luke S, Sam H, Ross T
