BU14s Warm up for Regionals in Bath

 8th Apr 2016

20160403BU14Bath-200After having played the Bath side in a friendly pre Easter the boys were keen to play again after a 1-1 draw where had the majority of the play and conceded a penalty stroke in the final few minutes. This time we were away and headed down to Bath Buccaneers who are based at the University of Bath...

What an amazing set up with huge modern sports facilities and no doubt a few uni applications will be coming from the u14s in a few years time. A great combination of a University linked to West Conference hockey side.

We started brightly with a lot of possession and a real purpose to transfer the ball at speed with a lot of lateral transfers giving us a lot of width in the game. We also showed a lot of patience in the final third of the pitch with boys always looking to find a pass when surrounded by defenders.

Toby scored after ‎lots of possession after galloping through the middle. He calmly finished with a neat reverse stick shot to make it 1-0 in the first 15 quarter. Unfortunately he then retired with a knee injury.

Then followed more pressure from Guildford and Joel managed to show some impressive 3-D skills to set up Fergie for a shot that went narrowly wide.

The second quarter was a closer affair with the Bath side getting into the game and Jake, Ben, Harry F and Will S all solid at the back.

‎Start of the 3rd quarter we conceded an early goal after a direct run through the middle through the Bath No 7 who was a threat early in the game. The boys responded well and upped the tempo with Mark P back from a hand injury always a threat down the right and Joel moving the ball as the pivot in the middle and Oscar and Lucas always offering and outlet down the flanks. Charlie then scored the 2nd after some neat inter passing down the left hand side and a shallow transfer at the top of the D between Fergie and Oscar. A great pass from the pass from Ben started the whole move.

The 3rd goal came in the final quarter where the superior fitness came into play and we continued to rotate all the players with Ben B also offering pace down the wing and several people rotating through the defence. Again a neat transfer down the left saw Fergie at centre half pass to Ben at the top of the D and then back to Oscar who crossed to Lucas to score.

The final goal came from a short corner struck by jake and then Lucas followed up to make it a solid 4-1 win.

A decent performance and now sets the boys up for the regionals next week where we face Crostyx, Canterbury and Surbiton in our group.  All to play for this Sunday and the Mercian Finals at the end of May.

Thanks to all the boys and parents for making the effort to travel down to Bath University.  A good day out!!
