With no changing facilities the Gondoliers met pitch side to face Horsham in this penultimate game of the season. The worries before the game were mainly concerned with not picking up injuries so close to the Easter skiing break...
Guildford Gondoliers 4 (Sturgess 2, Kuhle, Bigos) Horsham Hobblers 0
Regan arrived carrying the captain's responsibility and promptly arranged his troops in a 3/4/3/1 pattern with Josh in goal, Savage,Tonks and Bottoms in defence; Kuhle, Mullins, Regan and Howells in midfield; and HP, Sturgess and Richards up front - with Chris Belshaw and Johny Bigos (on his eventual arrival) starting as subs.
The Gondoliers got off to their now rather characteristic flying start and were 2-0 up within 10 minutes and Horsham struggling to get out of their half. This was quickly followed by a Kuhle bullet through a tiny gap off a short corner slip pass from Mullins to make it 3-0. We had many short corners awarded and should have converted more. We must work hard on our short corner routine next season because it is the only difference between the top three sides.
The second half saw Howells and Kuhle replaced by Belshaw and Bigos and, apart from a moment of magic from a well timed shot from Bigos, the second half lacked lustre and shape. Everyone seemed tired and uninspired or was it just me?
Sadly, to cap the end of season ennui, only three Gondos (Regan, Sturgess & Kuhle) found their way back to the refurbished Horsham clubhouse. This Saturday is our last game of the season away against Amersham and Chalfont. Let's finish it with a convincing performance and a full show after the match to celebrate a fantastic season. As added inducement to that full show, Nigel has promised the inside story to Sussex police enquiries pertaining to a tall Caucasian male in hockey kit worrying the local sheep in, of all places, Broadridge Heath Tesco petrol station.
