GU18s Final Junior Game for Some

 20th Mar 2016

20160320GU18Team-200The U18 girls played their second game in four days against Richmond up in Chiswick. This was to be quite a poignant game with Jess, Polly, Eloise K and Kathryn playing their last junior games! Additionally, Gabriella, who had been with us from Junior FC in Barcelona for the last five weeks was also playing her last game before returning home...

Due to many other things happening, availability was difficult and we were only able to take 11 players. Richmond started better than we did and whilst we had a lot of possession, we could not make it decisive and score. Richmond, on the contrary, exploited their opportunities forcing two penalty corners and scoring from both. This seemed set the girls to change up a gear. We then dominated the play, but could not get a goal.

We started the second half with Hannah W taking the centre mid role and Jess C moving up into the front. Unfortunately, we went down to 10 players with Polly taking a knock on an already damaged hand. However, we did not give up and Gabriella (who should have left for the airport by now!) made numerous runs down the right hand side and delivered one that Sinead put in the back of the net! That got the score to 2 – 1. We kept going, but were feeling the effect of only 10 players. Richmond got a break and scored a 3rd We did not give up and forced a penalty corner. Alice calmly dispatched the ball to make the score 3 – 2. The last few minutes we looked like scoring again, but 70 minutes of fast paced hockey took its toll and we could not equalize. Disappointed to lose, but pleased with the resolve of all the girls they worked to the end.
