Sevenoaks kindly organised a 7-a-side tournament for Under 13 Girls. Guildford took two teams on the day. The A's lost in the Final on flicks in their half of the tournament and the B's were the best of their pool...
Guildford 'Bs' team arrived at Sevenoaks early Sunday afternoon. The pool draw looked a challenge, we were pitted against A teams from some prestigious hockey clubs. That didn't spook the girls, Lucy had a look of 'bring it on' about her. We were sharing keepers with our A team Mia had a very busy afternoon.
v Sevenoaks 0-4
The first game was against Sevenoaks A team. They were a strong and powerful team with some giants of u13 players. The matches were 16 minutes one way with no half time. As we only had 7 players (Taya was late) the girls played valiantly but unfortunately lost 4-0.
v Guildford A 1-2
The second game was against our own A team, it was pitched as a friendly given East Grinstead B team pulled out at the last minute. Taya had appeared, which was definitely needed as the girls tired a little in the last match. Games against your own club are always close, and this was definitely the case. The match ended 2-1 to the A team but our B team gave the a real run for their money...
v Marden A 1-4
The final pool game was against Marden A team, the game was 1-1 after 5 minutes, but 3 breaks from Marden saw them win 4-1, it was a real shame as the girls dominated many parts of the game.
Play-Off v Marden B 3-1
We then moved onto the playoff, against Marden B for the 5/6 place with a 20 min match(10 each way). The girls were now buzzing. During the breaks I managed to see a huge VAT of hot chocolate, Cakes, Cookies and Crisps. Someone said Lucy and Annie had opened up a sweet and chocolate stand, but I'm sure it was only for the girls own consumption !!
The playoff game started and Guildford were full of energy and commitment, and as can often be the case in tournaments the best game is the last game. Mia in goal made some fine saves, Lucy was reading the game superbly moving the ball out of defence with speed. Grace, Annie and Florrie on the wide midfield positions ran their socks off, tracking their players while defending and supporting the forwards while we were in attack. Belle in center midfield was all action. Taya and Olivia as our forwards really pressed the opposition at every opportunity. All the girls played at their best. At half time the girls were unlucky to be behind 1-0, but the knew if the pitch the same desire and used the width of the pitch they would be victorious.
The second half was one way traffic, Guildford really dominated, Florrie scored our first goal, and then the second, I don't think I have seen someone smile so loudly !!
Olivia then wrapped things up with a third to win 3-1 and be the best B team in the tournament.
Player of the team was Belle, her energy, enthusiasm and skills with jab tackling really set the tempo for the team. Well done Belle and thanks to Sevenoaks for a great tournament.
