A top of the table clash should be a good game and this was no exception. It was tense, A LOT of skill and desire were on show, 4 goals and some good saves...
Spencer 2 - Guildford 2 (Kefford, Beyer)
We travelled with 2 debutants to the side, and 7 of the side who are at least 2 school years younger than the opposition; it was going to be hard. The early exchanges had the Guildford coach worried - the lack of marking and communication was a worry. However, as the first third developed, we grew into the game, and the experience of the older players started to influence the game and help the new players to find, their players when necessary, and space when we had the ball.
The first goal was a tribute to the passing from Archie, Jake, Fergus and Charlie K, who coolly slotted home. 1 nil up but we had started to run with the ball too much. Sadly at this point James M took a nasty ball on the knee and his afternoon was over.
After a quick reshuffle, Fergus moved into midfield and the 2nd smallest player in our side came on to marshall the right midfield, young Ted B.
The game was now real end-to-end; Sean in our goal confident in the ‘D’ and our midfield giving Caspar, Sam and the smallest hockey player Joe "Gouldie" G lots of chances up front.
The final third was going to be hard and to be fair to Spencer they were playing good hockey and were rewarded with a goal. 1-1.
What is great is that the boys could easily have wilted at this point but rather the opposite! Jake running hard, Caspar linking well with the midfield and the chance came for Caspar to spin close to the base line 2-1, with only 6-7 minutes left.
Tiredness was starting to creep in and tired legs and minds don’t close opposition down quickly enough. Sadly this allowed Spencer to score, but not before some great work from Sean and Frederick.
In all honesty a draw was about right but lots of lessons to be learnt and great Hockey on display.
MoM: Charlie K for tireless work in midfield and a great cool finish.
Editor's note: the BU12 Mavericks play in the Under 14 Boys Development League and are currently placed second with two games in hand (after Spencer). So far this season they have won 6 matches, drawn 2 and lost 2 against teams of boys much bigger and stronger than they are. We enter this league to get more experience at a more challenging level - winning is a product of good development. Well done, boys and coaches.
And here is coach Brian being set a task at training on Friday night - dribble around the big 4 and the big 3!!
