Gondoliers Chance of Top of Table Finish Slipping

 6th Feb 2016

The game started brightly with us playing some nice attacking hockey but without creating too many chances. Our attacks tended to peter out on the edge of their D with their two most able and mobile players deployed to pick off our crosses. We did, however get three short corners and their goalkeeper was forced into several sharp saves.

Southampton rarely threatened in the first half but, unfortunately, just on the stroke of half time they got their first real opportunity with a break down the right flank and scored completely against the run of play. Half time 0-1.

The second half started much more scrappily and an end-to-end pattern began to develop. About 10 minutes into the half the Southampton left defender attempted an aerial pass which only got about 4 feet off the ground and narrowly missed HP's head. Whilst we argued over the lack of a free hit, Southampton broke and won a penalty corner from which they scored a very nice deflected goal. 0-2.

On the 50th minute, we won our own short corner which was moved to the right and a sharp shot brought a scrappy save and we put in the rebound. Having all returned to the halfway line, we then discovered that the unattached umpire had ruled the first shot too high and persuaded the other official to change his decision and bring us back to a 16 yd hit. This, unfortunately, angered our players and the game began to get quite fractious with heavy challenges abounding and angry words with the umpires.

With ten minutes to go, a cross from the right was brought down on the penalty spot by me and put into the far corner of the goal on the half volley - we were back in the game and very much on the attack. We had a number of penalty corners and close shaves before, with about 4 minutes remaining, we gave the ball away carelessly on the halfway line and Southampton broke to score what proved to be the decisive goal. A 1-3 loss but a game we certainly should have won.
