Men's 1st XI Thrive Indoors

 19th Dec 2015

The Men's 1s took their season break indoors to try and play their hockey with the theme being "Outdoor on Tour" as was depicted by some of the tackling put on show. But thankfully our imported players, In James "Simmo" Simpson (GBU21 and GB Indoor/Outdoor Development Squad) and Chris Wyver (GBU21 and GB Indoor/Outdoor Development Squad) both with Gold medals from the recent Johor Cup, showed us all how indoor should be played and we learned quickly.

Surrey Qualifiers (Sunday 13 December)

Aside from a cheeky 4 goals including a hatrick during a 14 goal demolition of Purley, super star Zac Sherwani showed off his silky 3D skills and channelling ability by making himself look big... Indoor hockey allows for neither in a tight space!

William "Cambridge" Cairns showed off his engineering ability and kept his conversion rate high scoring 5 goals from corners from just as many attempts. Being nominated captain for the day he also tried to take the "discipline" crown by keeping to the festive nature of the season and shopping for his Christmas cards from the over exuberant Santa "Umpire" Claus that decided he preferred last year's format of Indoor.

This moment added with another already sin binned allowed Mo "snake hips" Rahman to run past the whole team during a counter attack using his silky "stick blocking" skills to slot one away. Coach Mullins was bemused with the attacking intent during a 4 vs 6 stint, which is reasonable when you're 6-2 up but 2 men down, but Mo's not known for being reasonable.

Game one: Guildford 8 - 3 Woking

The day started off with playing against Woking and an opening short corner scored early on by Mo followed swiftly by another corner and then a 3rd from Will before GHC starting scoring from open play. The goals came often and the final score ended 8-3 to GHC.

Goals came from:

  • Mo Rahman 2 PCs and 2 FG
  • Will Cairns 3 PCs
  • Zac Sherwani 1 FG

Game two: Guildford 10 - 5 Purley Walcountonians

Second game was against Purley Walcountians who had lost narrowly to Woking in their first game 5-4. Guildford set about the task in a proficient way creating chances early on with Simmo narrowly missing the target by a metre... but given the same chance later on after a scything run down the right slotted one away just inside the left post showing class is permanent.

Zac Sherwani came alive slotting away a hatrick all from open play and even Tatai and Magic got on to the score sheet, Magic showing a sense of relief after a bit of a goal drought during times of late having come from being the top goal scorer in the Polish Premier league.

Aside from the couple of stints where we were a player or two short the game was never in doubt as GHC kept a 4 goal margin at all times, Purley decided to show what they were made of at 5-1 down and kept it interesting but as Purley scored, so did GHC. Coach Mullins didn't want the onslaught to relent so he kept on whipping at us!

The 3 lads from the boys U16s also accounted for themselves very well putting in solid stints showing that the future at Guildford is bright. The final score was 10-5 to GHC.

Goals from:

  • Zac Sherwani 3 FGs
  • Mo Rahman 1 PC and 1 FG
  • Will Cairns 2 PCs
  • Simmo 1 FG
  • Magic 1 FG
  • Tatai 1 FG

Team Sheet: Chris Wyver (GK), James Simpson, Mo Rahman, Will Cairns, Tatai Dewes, Zac Sherwani, Maciej Walkowiak, Tom Walton, Max Bowerman, Harry Atkins and Cameron Rodgers.
