The Gondoliers were well up for this local derby and the mood in the dressing room before the game was energetic, not just because of last weeks successful team dinner but also because Brent declared that a win would put us to the top of the league. We had a fairly strong squad of 13 players which inevitably lead to a substitute regime. Thanks to all those who took a quarter off.
The game itself was played at some pace with several attacking opportunities from both sides squandered. Our defence of Mark Woodward, Mike Regan (pronounced REEEGAN) Tim Savage, Stephen Windsor-Lewis and Chris Basey were well up to the task of containing their rather lackluster attack.
Our midfield comprised Nick Winn, Chris Basey, Brent Bottoms, Nick Kuhle and Tom Carney and they all played good hockey at times with good interpassing. The first half saw several attacks, predominantly down the right flank with Kuhle slipping it to HP (Peter Rosoman) playing on the right wing. Strangely however not one short corner was awarded to Guildford all game. Usually HP will pick up a couple with his tight dribbling and Sturgess will pick up a couple but neither happened. The difference in the first half was a quick slip pass from Bottoms to Sturgess which resulted in a one on one with the Keeper that was fortunately converted.
The second half saw Alistair Richards move onto the left wing in place of Chris Belshaw who moved back to left midfield. Within 2 minutes the terrier was onto a through pass, cut inside and slotted the ball from an edge of D position. Great goal well taken and gave the Gondos room to breath in a tight game. Haslemere had several short corners and indeed a P flick was awarded on the back of one of these. Mark Woodward made an excellent save and was solid throughout. In the last quarter a second through ball from Bottoms saw Sturgess through on goal again to make it 3-0. Very enjoyable tight game where the final scoreline did not necessarily reflect the game |
