With no league match this week, we were given an opportunity to play a friendly against Epsom. The first morning frost of the season had cleared in time for the 12:00 push back and the girls welcomed Jasmine & Emma from the U12s to supplement the team...
From the start Guildford looked to be a little stronger technically but we were matched by Epsom's physical work-rate and movement. This made the game very condensed in the Epsom half. Epsom challenged hard and had a defensive wall of players breaking up and stopping the frequent Guildford attacks. Guildford managed to go a goal up when we finally played the ball with some width, drove to the by-line and crossed for Libby to convert.
The game continued in the same style for the whole of the game. Guildford dominated possession and Epsom played with desire and commitment to break up our play. The game ended 0-1 to Guildford.
The girls played with desire and ran tirelessly. A few things they must think about for the next game.
- Composure on the ball. Don't panic when under pressure, protect the ball and roll out.
- When faced with a bank of 3 or 4 defenders, don't look to run through them, keep the ball moving laterally across the pitch to make the opposition move out of position.
- Keep possession at all costs, it is far better to pass backwards or sideways rather than lose the ball if a forward pass is not clear.
Special mentions. Raph in goal had one of those days where she did not have a lot of action, but Raph kept focus throughout the game and for the occasions where she was needed, she was alert and composed. The player of the match, voted for by Epsom was Issie DV. Issie ran the line really well, stretching the game when the opportunity arose and created space. Well done Issie.
