A brief report on an amazing afternoon of hockey today - huge thank you to everyone who turned out to play and to Maggs and Mat both of whom gave up their Sunday afternoons to guide and encourage us to a great performance!
The Haslemere ladies were an extremely competent opposition - perhaps the clue was in the name - Haslemere Ladies Masters. They were a strong team, with some very experienced players, and not so very many ‘Back-to-Hockey’-ers! Undaunted, our Guildford side worked extremely hard, marked well, defended well, and even once or was it twice made it into their D! Huge credit goes to everyone in defence (and in fact at one time or another that probably accounted for every Guildford player on the pitch!), constantly under pressure, they made clearance after clearance, backed up superbly by Rachel in goal who made lots of important saves keeping the score line creditably low!
To have kept the game in low single figures was a real achievement in our first ever fixture, against an opposition who play regularly in a league. Most importantly, and in addition to all the learning points to take away in terms of match play, was that every single player played their hearts out and it was fantastic fun! The post-match cake was also wonderful - sadly I forgot to get a pic of the girls pitch-side but here they all are resting very weary limbs with a very welcome cuppa!
Really looking forward to our re-match back at Broadwater on January 11th at 3pm - put the date in your diaries now!
