Ladies 1s Host Surbiton

 8th Mar 2014

Guildford 0 2  Surbiton

The Ladies 1s faced Surbiton this week. This was once again a game that we were desperate to win to keep oursleves out of relegation. The weather was lovely and we did not water the pitch to make it a little more bouncy (perhaps this might upset the opposition?).

The game started fast and competitive. Guildford tried our best to disrupt the play of Surbiton with our defensive lines. We managed to do well most of the time with our press and Surbiton could feel the pressure. The Surbiton Centre back was the strongest player on the pitch and she started to step inside the forwards and put pressure on up the field.

The Guildford defence worked hard and kept the ball out as much as possible. Surbiton were not actually getting into our D. We even managed to win a corner in the first half, but unfortunately Kirsty Farquar’s slap went too far right. Eventually the pressure on the defence was too much and Surbiton managed to get into the D and get a shot off and convert their chance.

The Guildford ladies kept their heads up and tried to come back at Surbiton. But before half time Surbiton managed to get into the Guildford D again and a skilful attacker managed to score on the near post. We went into half time 2-0 down.

Guildford came out fighting again and tried over and over to get the ball up into the attacking D. It was tough going and whilst we worked hard, we could not create any real chances.  Jenno then changed the system slightly and pushed one of the backs up into the midfield, but even with the extra player in midfield it was hard to break through. Two chances were missed when two forwards weren't able to pick up some excellent passes forward.

Right at the death of the game Guildford managed to get another short corner, but could not convert the opportunity and the game ended at 2-0 to Surbiton.

Next weekend theLadies face Henley in another must win meeting. Good luck ladies!
