Brighton & Hove 3 - 0 Guildford
The Ladies 1s were out of the relegation zone for the time being, but as two teams go down, Guildford need to make sure we win a few more to stop teams below catching up. We felt we could possibly beat Brighton and were ready for a tough game against them.
The weather was terrible with very strong winds and rain and it looked like the game might be called off. It seemed to calm down just before they were due to play, so the game went ahead.
Guildford were missing captain Sarah Morris and another strong player Verity Phillips. Young Jess C was called up from the 2s to help out. She played at left mid until Sarah Morris arrived at half time.
It was tough on the defence from the starting whistle. Guildford were not having their best day at the office and the pressure was on. The attacks kept coming down our left side and there was plenty work for Kirsty Farquar and Kirsty Rostron to do. Eventually we conceded a short corner. Brighton managed to score from it even though the ball hit Kerry Jennings (running 1) half way up the calf and rising. Despite asking the umpire if he didn’t think the ball was too high, the goal was given. Guildford managed to keep holding them out for the rest of the first half but did not manage to create anything on the other side of the pitch and did not win one short corner.
Coming out for the second half 1-0 down, Guildford were determined to try and get that equaliser. Captain Sarah Morris had arrived and players felt that they had an opportunity to create something in the second half.
Unfortunately the play did not improve and again Guildford could not create any goal scoring opportunities or win any short corners. In fact, we struggled even to get into the opposition D.
Brighton kept up the pressure and managed to score two deflection goals to finish the game at 3-0.
Guildford were disappointed with their performance but still believe two wins are possible to stay safe in the league. Come on ladies!
