Following our first loss in nearly two years, it’s fair to say that we were eager to put things right against London Edwardians.
Coach Rachel’s team talk (including an inspirational 11th century proverb...) had us raring to go, resulting in a quick lead early in the first half.
We played some excellent hockey, with Bryony and Lizzie making quick leads into space just like we had practised in training. Daisy worked hard to prevent the ball from reaching our D and we were well in control for the first 20 minutes.
Tabby’s much anticipated return to the pitch was marked with the goal of the day, putting us 2 up before half time. However, it soon became clear that Ed’s were dangerous on the break and, despite some excellent tackling by Georgie and Lucy, we conceded before the break. We went into half time realising that we were going to have to score plenty to keep them at bay!
The second half continued to be played at a fast pace, with Michelle and Vix saving us from trouble on more than one occasion by playing the ball calmly out from defence. Nellie and Fleur worked tirelessly in the midfield to win the ball back and push forward, meaning we had the majority of the possession. The Ed’s defence struggled to handle Ella and Scarlett’s pace (and determination!), leading to two well-deserved goals.
At 4-2 we thought we were safe and may have allowed our quality to dip slightly... resulting in us conceding 2 disappointing goals. Fortunately, Alex made several superb saves to prevent us from falling behind!
At 4-4 we knew we deserved the win and were not prepared to let 3 points slip away! Our Wednesday night sprint training paid off (thanks, Rachel!) and we were able to dig deep for the last few minutes to grind out the fifth goal we needed.
The score line may not have reflected the way that we played, but a win is a win! Looking forward to more of the same next week!
Fiona
