Saturday 5th September saw the Ladies Cup Squad in competitive action for the first time since the middle of March. The England Hockey Championships were called to a halt during the pandemic lockdown; certain competitions were re-instated including the Tier 2 women's semi-final...
The first challenge was prospect of a 4 ½ hour journey to Sheffield to play. The team chose to travel there and back in a day to avoid having to stay overnight. Kingsferry Coaches did a sterling job in getting the team to the game in good time with all the players relaxed and ready to go. Andrew had negotiated with the home team to have a half hour training session a couple of hours before the game. This proved very beneficial in stretching the legs and getting a feel for the pitch.
The team worked on the basis that Sheffield were going to assume that they were tired from having a long journey and wouldn’t be sharp. Within the first couple of minutes Sheffield must have realised that was not the case and within the first 10 minutes the visitors were 2-0 up.
The game then settled down to be, in the main, in Sheffield’s half with the home team finding it difficult to break the Guildford press. It was towards the end of the half that Guildford found the net to take a 3-0 lead into the second half.
During the half time team talk it was decided that 2 more goals would finish the game. The ladies took that on board and continued in the same way as the first half; it was not long before they were finding the net again with a combination of penalty corners and field goals.
The final score was 7 – 0. Sheffield University Bankers play in the equivalent Northern league to that of our Ladies in the South. They were gracious in defeat and paid the Guildford Ladies a great compliment, saying that they could learn a lot from them. When you consider that all bar four of the squad are 18 or younger that was a tremendous compliment.
The final will be held no Sunday 13th at the Nottingham Hockey Centre. The Final will be a re-match of last year's final against Loughborough University 2nd XI. The game is to be played behind closed doors, but will be streamed live on Facebook, so you can catch all the action as it happens. Pushback is at 12:30pm. Good luck to the team.
