Guildford welcomed Surbiton to Broadwater on Saturday.
The game started with both teams playing attacking hockey. Guildford had more of the game, but could not convert. We won several penalty corners and when it looked as if they were never going to score, Kerryn Swanepoel put one in from the top of the D to give the home team the lead.
The game continued with both teams having opportunities. Surbiton equalised - controversially - with a goal that should not have been allowed (even acknowledged by the Surbiton Coach).
Surbiton had the momentum and launched attacks on the Guildford D. Keeper Alice Cobb and her defence held strong, but a defensive error led to the award of a p-flick which Surbiton scored to take a 2-1 lead.
In an attempt to draw the game, Guildford attacked hard, all the way to the final whistle when we were awarded a penalty corner. As the ball crossed the goal line, the umpire's whistle blew for an infringement; a further penalty corner followed which was cleared from the line. So close.
Final score 2-1 to Surbiton.
A disappointing result to finish the league season, which has now been suspended with 3 games still to play due to the spreading covid-19 pandemic.
The GHC L1s have had a great second half of the season and were well on track for a possible second or third spot finish in South Division 1. Not bad going: 2 promotions and a top 3 (at least 5th) position in three years!
