Ladies' 2s Everything to Play for v OCs 1s

 7th Mar 2020

20200307-L2-2GHC Ladies 2s are pushing for promotion again this season and this game against Old Cranleighans could be a big factor in their promotion bid.

Going into the game, the top four teams were all within 4 points of each other:

  • London Academicals 1s were on top with 35
  • Spencer 3s close behind on 34
  • Old Cranleighans 1s on 33
  • Guildford 2s on 32

So it was everything to play for in this game. The first time we played OCs it was a draw and there was a lot of aggression towards the feisty Lydia Murphy, who used to attend Cranleigh school. So this was a big grudge match and we really wanted to win it!

Firs Half

The game started fast with both teams playing aggressively from the push back. Guildford were attacking well and manged to win a short corner early on. The ladies did a variation they had practised in training and Emma Higgins put the ball in the goal in a clinical finish to get Guildford off to the best start we could have hoped for.

The rest of the first half Old Cranleighans tried desperately to even it up again, but wave after wave of attacks were held back by the Guildford defence. Tash Drover, in goal, did a wonderful job as usual and they couldn’t get past her.

Suzy Cook and young Steph Smith worked like clockwork together at the back and tackled relentlessly. Guildford attacked again and again as well nearly scored again with a near miss from Katie Lockwood after an excellent team set up and pass across the D.

Second Half

The ladies came out after half time determined to score another goal to take the pressure off. They looked energised despite the gruelling first half and kept up the pressure on the Old Cranleighans. Lydia Murphy was again the thorn in the opposition's side and ran continuously from end to end of the pitch. She seemed to have endless energy! She was key in this game and they couldn’t stop her despite their trying.

The second half yielded another four goals. Two more from short corners scored by Anna Jourdan and Eliza Wheeler. Eliza scored another field goal and Caitlin Davis had an excellent individual spin goal to bring the total to 5-0. Well done to Steph and Lydia for getting joint man of the match.

What a game ladies! The effort put in by all was phenomenal. The hard work and skill shown made the game the best we have played all season. The team is now in a position to bid for promotion. With only two games to go, the ladies just need to keep up the strong performances and we could be promoted. Next Saturday London Academicals and Spencer play each other, so that gives us the opportunity to get into the running depending on the results of that game. So we are hoping that they draw or London Academicals win it outright.
