The Under 16 Girls played in their third of four EH Championship matches against Horsham in the wind and constant rain...
There was some doubt about whether the weather would interfere, but both sides were keen to play as we would find it difficult to find another date.
Both sides started well after a quick warm-up. Horsham were passing the ball well enough, but the Guildford girls were off to a good start themselves and with a move that started from defence, passed the ball through several players to score in the first 3 minutes.
This was followed by another team effort that had the final reverse stick hit going wide of the post, but then almost a replay of the same effort and shot going in for 2-0. Horsham then won a corner and had a few other chances that the defence dealt with well. And whatever did get through Ila was there to clear.
Four more Guildford goals in the second half - all nicely and collectively worked - made for a 6-0 scoreline.
Much credit to Horsham for never giving up despite having no subs and therefore no respite for any player in what was more than an hour of constant rain, sometimes very heavy. Credit also to the Horsham supporters who had to travel on flooded roads and who supported their girls, nicely positively, to the end.
They were a good side but the Guildford girls' quality passing game proved too much on the day.
Massive thanks to our "international" umpires, Jayme (from South Africa) and Matt (from Canada), who endured the conditions - both were soaked to the bone despite having "waterproof" clothing on.
The girls have one more pool stage match in the EH Champs away to Alton on 1st March. A win will see them through to Area Finals.
