Young Leaders Programme
"I think my hockey improved as a result of trying to help the girls i coached but I learnt other skills, too - strategies of how to get the best out of people but to have fun, too/ Also, I really enjoyed being part of the team".
For many years, our older Juniors have helped coach their younger counterparts. Many use the assistant coaching opportunities to fulfill the Service component of their Duke of Edinburgh certifictae or International Baccalaureate diploma; some help out simply because they enjoy it and learn a lot.
"When you are told you're going to be taking your own group of kids with a couple of other Young Leaders as I did, I felt like I was really making a difference to teh players".
Recently, under Director of Hockey Dan Fox's leadership, the programme has been expanded to include more formal training, mentorship and learning opportunities. In 2019/20 we had 41 Juniors age 15 to 17 coaching players aged 6 to 17 - this was up from 24 the previous season.
"Get involved as much as possible! It's a brilliant experience!"
For 2020/21 we are targetting 45 Young Leaders including a 'Young Leaders Plus' element of the programme for returning coaches who want to take their coaching to the next level.
Invitations were sent in early August to all 2019/20 Under 15s - if you are interested in getting involved, please contact Dan on .
