Ladies 1st XI Specsavers Surrey Sports Team of the Year

 3rd Dec 2018

20181203-Ladies1SurreySportAwardAdding to the Sport Godalming Team of the Year Award they won in October, Guildford Ladies' 1s enjoy yet another prestigious recognition of their achievements...

On Monday evening the Ladies' 1s were awarded the Active Surrey Specsavers Sports Team of the Year 2018 Award.

Captain Libby Leadbeater and Manager Andrew Fergusson attended the awards ceremony at Brooklands Hotel. The evening was a celebration of sport in Surrey and there was a real emphasis on women and girls in sport.

In an interview with BBC Surrey's Tim Durrans, Libby explained how the Ladies had come from struggling to stay in the South regional league three seasons ago; the Ladies started that that season with only 6 players and a new coach.

Through those challenges - and another change of coach the following season - the team managed to create a really strong team that has gone from strength to strength. Andrew went on to say that a strong part of the team are young players who have come through the Junior section - he pointed out that Guildford have by far the youngest squad in the league.

Other winners on the evening included both men's and women's Surrey Cricket Club teams, Leanne Riley (England and Harlequins Flyhalf) and James Miller (UK U21 No1 pistol shooter), so the Guildford ladies were in good company.
