At the start of last season we were down to the bare bones in terms of players available to play for the Men's 1s and my prediction was that it was going to be a tough season. How right I was!
Having read through the match reports from last season, the general message was we had to get tougher, fitter both mentally and physically and learn how to win.
After 7 matches we had achieved zero points. Then something happened, suddenly there was a dawning that this really does matter. And so the comeback began!
8th game v Havant...were we still on zero points with Havant them lying 2nd in the table. 70 minutes later we had our first 3 points. Ten games later we had survived and Havant were relegated.
I have no doubt that no other team in any league would have been able to turn around the situation like we did. Commitment, dedication, hard work, discipline and belief in each other and our chosen systems were key to our success.
Why do I tell you this story? Because this year I truly believe we have what it takes to once again challenge for the title. Our pre-season has been one of the best on record, drawing the first and winning the next scoring an impressive 17 goals, which was more than we achieved in the whole of last season!
New players have joined and once over the initial shock of a Jenno first training session have fitted seamlessly into the Guildford way. The Performance Section of the club has really started to take shape which has enabled us to expose more players into the system and has and will continue to give younger players the opportunity to experience what is required to train at this level.
As always I would like to thank the many Sponsors whose generosity enables us to be as professional as we can and provides a support system for expenses such as travel, kit and match fees.
