What an exciting weekend for Guildford Hockey Club! As we near the end of the competitive season, league results and important qualifiers can test just how hard everyone has worked during the season - from Juniors to Ladies to Men, there are successes all over the show this weekend. With more to come before we close the season, here is a brief look at this weekend's successes...
Under 10 Girls win the Surrey Cup AND the Surrey Plate
Surrey Hockey Association held their annual County Finals on Sunday 11 March for the Under 10 age groups. The Girls’ tournament included 15 teams in the tougher Surrey Cup competition and 28 teams in the Surrey Plate. Forty-three teams comprising more than 400 players were hosted at Guildford Hockey Club. The Guildford HC Girls had a superb day, winning Gold in both the Cup and the Plate. An excellent level of hockey was played by these 9 and 10 year olds culminating in tight Final games that included both keepers facing penalty strokes.
Under 10 Boys win the Surrey Cup
The equivalent Boys’ tournament was held at Woking Hockey Club with 22 teams competing in the Surrey Plate and 9 teams in the Surrey Cup. Guildford HC Boys won the Cup in a close and hard fought 1-0 final against Wimbledon.
Both Under 10 Boys and Girls Cup teams progress to the England Hockey South Finals taking place in May. This success comes at the end of a season in which coaches, parents, and players all worked hard week in and week out during their weekly training and Sunday matches. A huge well done to all involved!
Under 12 Boys and Girls win Bronze in the Surrey Cup, Under 12 Boys win the Surrey Plate
Guildford’s Under 12 Boys and Girls both won Bronze in their Surrey Cup competitions held in late February with the Under 12 Boys also winning Gold in the Under 12 Surrey Plate. That’s six sets of medals in two weeks for these young Guildford players who have enjoyed a long, happy and successful season.
Under 16 Boys win the England Hockey Area Finals
This day also saw Guildford HC’s Under 16 Boys win their England Hockey Area Finals in the National Championships to progress to the National Finals taking place 7-8 April in Nottingham.
And the success doesn’t stop with the Juniors, as Guildford’s newest team, the Ladies 5th XI - who joined the Surrey League only at the beginning of this season - have secured promotion by winning their league with three matches still to play. Guildford Ladies’ 1st XI also went top of their South league table over the weekend and will be looking to consolidate that position in their final three matches over the next 10 days.
GHC Men's 1st XI won their semi-final of the Surrey Cup on Sunday v London Edwardians. The Surrey Cup Final will be played Sunday 8 April at Old Cranleighans.
Watch out for the final few games of the league season and the post-season events - well done so far and good luck to all!
