GHC Inmaculada 2019 Tour
Well done to your player for having been selected for this year's tour to one of Europe's top youth tournaments.
This December will be the ninth year GHC participate in this annual youth hockey tournament hosted by the Club de Polo de Barcelona. Officially known as the Torneo Internacional de la Inmaculada "Marga Monegal," this is the tournament’s 33rd year and has over the years attracted the top clubs in Spain and many from across Europe.
In the past we have seen teams from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Russia, and Ireland to name a few. About eighty teams will be participating across three age groups of boys and girls and the Polo Club are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of players again this year. Click here for the Club de Polo de Barcelona Tournament Inmaculada website.
The Polo Club has produced more than Spanish Olympic players and their top Ladies' and Men’s teams compete in Spain’s premier league. In the past they have hosted the Hockey World Championships and the Olympic Qualifiers. The Polo Club also host one of Europe’s well known top club tournaments every year in January, the 'Kings Hockey' or Hockey Reyes.
The Inmaculada is the youth version of the Reyes tournament, which has been running for 72 years. The Inmaculada is named for the public holiday (6 December) which gives the Friday off for the whole of Spain as well as for Marga Monegal, a past leader of Polo Juniors.
From 2018 the U15 Boys and Girls teams have been moved to the Adult section of the tournament which is played in January.
GHC are participating this year in the Inmaculada with 2 teams - Under 11 Girls and Under 11 Boys. The tournament starts at 9am on Friday 6 December and finishes at 3pm on Sunday 8 December. Our first matches will not be before noon on Friday.
GHC's objectives for the tour are to challenge our top teams and players at this half-way point of the season, get teams ready for important end of season tournaments, and give the players the experience of being on international tour with their team. Our main tour arrangements are for the teams to travel together on Friday morning 6 December, returning Sunday 8 December.
Each team travels with a GHC coach and three GHC Officers (DBS checked helpers).
A note about the age groups - elsewhere in the world, hockey is played by calendar year age group ie birthdates based on a 1 Jan to 31 Dec cutoff. Club and School hockey in England are based on the school year (1 Sep to 31 Aug).
The Inmaculada Tournament age groups are for players who are turning 11 or 13 in the 2019 calendar year ie "Under 11" or "Under 13". What we call our GHC "Under 12" teams are the equivalent of this with the excpetion of a minority of players born between Sep and Dec 2019 who will have turned 12 in 2019. Polo Club are aware that one or two players may be a few weeks older than those who turned 11 in 2019 but are satisfied that it is important for us to bring a club team and to not exclude players whose birthdays are a handful of weeks or days over the limit.
To avoid confusion whilst at the tournamnet it is best to think about the team as a U11 team in order to fit into the tournament definitions.
