Guildford Hockey Club Juniors had the pleasure of hosting Alex Danson for the evening on Friday 23 January during Junior training evening.
Alex is currently part of the GB and England Women's teams, having competed in many competitions for them including London 2012 where she won a Bronze medal.
An outgoing and approachable person, Alex was also an engaging and inspirational speaker. Our evening started with her on the pitch with the Under 12 Girls training session where she got stuck in doing drills with the girls. Smiles all around...
Then a photo with the Under 12 Girls Squad...
...before 350 of us all filed into the Broadwater School hall where Alex was introduced by Mr Garry Herbert, MBE.
Garry is himself an Olympian having won Gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics Coxed Pairs. He has attended every Olympics since then as a participant or BBC commentator. Many thanks to Garry for establishing and following through on the contact with Alex for us!
An engaging and entertaining speaker, Alex talked about her life going from a junior club player to the big time including the trials and tribulations of not making the cut and working very hard in order to get another chance.
She started playing for her club and noted that it is important to set and reach your goal whether it is to play for your club or your school or your country. Be the best that you can be.
She talked about how important hard work is.
She gave us some insight on what it's like to go to the Olympics.
And she showed us two of her medals, Bronze from the 2012 Olympics and Silver from the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Members of the audience got to ask questions...
A big thank you!
And then she signed hundreds of sticks, balls, bags, shirts and more...
And one last photo with the Under 14 Girls
What a lovely evening. Many thanks again to Will Esplen and Garry Herbert of our Under 12 Girls squad for organising her visit. And of course a huge thank you to Alex herself for being so generous with her time!!
